Before you arrive
Stargazing at Cambrian Cottages
You don't need to venture far to find an exceptional night sky. At our cottages in Gwyddgrug, you'll enjoy the same dark sky conditions as the official Mynydd Llanllwni site, at an elevation of around 180 metres. There are plenty of spots around the grounds where you can set up a telescope and take in a spectacular view overhead.
To minimise light pollution and protect local wildlife, our outdoor lighting is kept to a minimum - on a timer, downward-facing, and using warm-toned lamps. All barn windows are fitted with lined curtains or blinds.
One thing to be aware of: our cottages sit halfway up a valley, with some wind turbines and trees on the horizon. If you'd prefer a completely open, panoramic view, the official Mynydd Llanllwni site is just ten minutes away and surrounded by open heathland.
Nearby Dark Sky Sites
Mynydd Llanllwni Dark Sky Discovery Site
Just four miles away - around ten minutes by car - this Bortle Class 2–3 site sits at an elevation of 314 metres and offers sweeping, unobstructed panoramic views of the night sky. To find the adjacent car park, follow the what3words address: machinery.segmented.lamp
Elan Valley International Dark Sky Park
For a longer outing, the Elan Valley International Dark Sky Park is around two hours away and well worth the trip. Find out more at elanvalley.org.uk/darkskies.

What should I bring?
You'll need your own telescope and tripod or alternatively, a camera or smartphone with a long-exposure or night mode setting can produce stunning results. A torch with a red filter is also worth packing - red light preserves your night vision far better than white.
Stargazing can be a cold, still activity, so dress in warm, layered clothing. You're welcome to use our blankets, and with the cottages close by, a steady supply of hot drinks is never far away.
What equipment can I borrow?
We can loan you a pair of binoculars and a 40m power extension lead for long-exposure setups. Depending on where you're set up, you may also be able to connect to our WiFi to control your camera remotely. Heading off-site? We have folding chairs you're welcome to borrow. We hope to expand our equipment in future — watch this space.

Planning Your Visit
Is it safe to stargaze at night?
Before heading out after dark, take a few minutes to familiarise yourself with the area in daylight. Always carry a torch, watch your footing on uneven ground, and be mindful of ditches and running water. You may also encounter some wonderful local wildlife - keep an eye out for deer, bats, owls and hedgehogs.
How do I plan around the weather and moon?
The websites listed below are a great starting point. For general tips, gostargazing.co.uk and thecambrianmountains.co.uk/discover-dark-skies are both excellent resources.
